Free BaZi Calculator: Read Your Four Pillars of Destiny Online

BaZi (八字), also called the Four Pillars of Destiny, is the backbone of Chinese astrology. It turns your birth year, month, day and hour into four pairs of Chinese characters — a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch for each — giving you eight characters in total. That’s where the name “BaZi” (literally “eight characters”) comes from.

The four pillars at a glance

Pillar Represents Plain meaning
Year Ancestry / early life Your roots and background
Month Parents / youth The soil your career grows in
Day Self / spouse The Day Stem is you
Hour Children / later life Old age and legacy

The Heavenly Stem of the Day pillar is called your Day Master — it represents you, the chart’s owner. Reading a BaZi chart almost always starts by finding which of the ten stems is your Day Master.

Why birth time and place matter

BaZi is sensitive to your exact hour of birth — the hour pillar changes every two hours, so a fuzzy birth time skews the whole chart. Serious practitioners also apply a true solar time correction based on your birth longitude, because clock time (set by time zones) drifts from the real position of the sun. That’s why an accurate birthplace — down to the city or district — changes your result.

Our free BaZi calculator → does all of this in your browser:

  • Type your birthplace and pick it from live suggestions — it locates your exact latitude, longitude and time zone automatically.
  • It applies the true-solar-time correction before setting your four pillars.
  • Nothing is sent to a server for the calculation; the engine runs on your device.

Once you know your Day Master and the Five-Element balance of your chart, you have a mirror for understanding where your energy concentrates — far more useful than rushing to ask “will I get rich?”
